PROCEDURES
This procedure is performed to treat gum disease. Traditional gum disease procedures have been very invasive. Using laser in the treatment of gum disease has been shown to have the following advantages: the surgery will be minimally invasive and very conservative. The laser is capable of not only mechanically removing infectious tissue, but also disinfects the area being treated, hence faster healing with better results will be seen in most cases. Due to the conservative manipulation of the areas being treated, minimal post-operative discomfort will be experienced by the patient. Less tooth sensitivity and recession is seen with Laser Assisted Periodontal Surgery when compared to traditional gum surgery. The Bio-stimulatory effect of the laser also helps faster surgical recovery.
LASER ASSISTED OSSEOUS SURGERY
Osseous surgery, also known as pocket-depth reduction, is a surgical procedure intended to restore your gums to a healthier, more natural state. If your periodontist has recommended osseous surgery, it is because you have pockets that are too deep to clean with daily at-home oral hygiene and a professional care routine. Your bone and gum tissue should fit snugly around your teeth, creating a protective cover from bacteria. If you have periodontal disease, the supporting tissue and bone are destroyed, and this forms pockets around the teeth. Over time, these pockets become deeper and provide a larger space for bacteria to live. As bacteria develop around the teeth, they can accumulate and advance under the gum tissue. These deep pockets collect even more bacteria, resulting in further bone and tissue loss. To reduce the need for extractions, osseous surgery may be recommended.
Reducing pocket depth and eliminating existing bacteria are important in preventing damage caused by the progression of periodontal disease and in helping you maintain a healthy smile. Eliminating bacteria alone may not be sufficient to prevent disease recurrence. Deeper pockets are more difficult for you and your dental care professional to clean, so it's important to make them as small as possible. Small pockets and a combination of daily oral hygiene and professional maintenance care increase your chances of keeping your natural teeth, as well as decrease the chance of serious health problems associated with periodontal disease.
Dental implants are titanium roots that can replace missing teeth or secure loose dentures. They feel and function like natural teeth. They stimulate the jaw bone and help prevent bone loss which typically occurs after teeth are lost. They are self-supportive and can be flossed and brushed like natural teeth. They are made of titanium, are impervious to cavities, and never need a root canal. As they are self-supportive, they help preserve natural teeth by avoiding “cutting” healthy teeth down to allow for a bridge.
Dental implants are replacement tooth roots and often a preferred option to a bridge or traditional dentures. Unlike dentures, dental implants are permanent and non-removable. Some of the reasons for their preferred course of action are:
- They include a strong foundation for permanent replacement teeth. Implants are customized to the individual patient’s mouth to avoid any unnatural vexing or intrusion upon any remaining natural teeth
- Dental implants make chewing easy and more pleasant than do dentures
- Implants are durable and can last for the length of a patient’s life. They do, however, require the same standard oral hygiene as natural teeth. The individual must brush, floss, rinse and keep regular dental visits
Full-mouth reconstruction, full-mouth rehabilitation, and full-mouth restoration are terms often used interchangeably to describe the process of rebuilding or restoring all of the teeth in both the upper and lower jaws simultaneously. Your prosthodontist, who has years of experience working with the materials and procedures related to full mouth reconstruction, will develop a plan that addresses all your needs and will leave you with a perfect smile, ideal bite, and optimal function.
- You may be a candidate for full mouth reconstruction if:
- Your teeth have been lost due to decay or trauma
- Your teeth have been injured or fractured
- Your teeth have become severely worn because of long-term acid erosion (from foods, beverages, or acid reflux)
- You have ongoing jaw, muscle, or headache pain related to your bite
The extent of your reconstruction will depend on the condition of your teeth. Your prosthodontist may recommend crowns, bridges, veneers, or implants to restore your smile to its best possible condition. He or she will also address the state of your gum tissue, as the health of your gums may impact the type of restorations you receive.
Your treatment plan will entail a step-by-step process detailing all aspects of your reconstruction. The duration of your treatment will depend on the extent of work needed, but in the end it will all be worth it. Your teeth, mouth, and smile will be healthy and beautiful for the rest of your life.
The primary goal of your gums is to protect the teeth from bacterial build up and keep teeth stable and in alignment. Sometimes too much gum tissue can cause the gum to overlap the teeth resulting in a ‘gummy smile’.
Dental surgeons are able to improve the appearance of the smile using laser gum recontouring surgery. This procedure is successfully performed with laser at Dr. Elyassian’s office.
The aim of gum recontouring is to reshape the gum, remove any excess gum tissue that is overlapping teeth, and create an aesthetically attractive smile. Using a laser, your dentist will remove the excess gum tissue and reshape the remaining gum. Occasionally dentists need to reshape the bone at the same time to prevent the gum regrouping and covering the teeth. Patients who want to improve the appearance of their smile further may choose to have dental crowns or dental veneers fitted to teeth during the same appointment. If you are considering cosmetic dentistry, schedule a free consultation with Dr. Elyassian and learn about costs and treatment options.
